The Barter Theatre, Abingdon, VA.
The theatre opened during the Depression, so many people couldn't easily afford admission. The theatre's founder, Robert Porterfield, instituted a policy whereby patrons could exchange food for tickets--hence the name "Barter." Gregory Peck once played on this stage. As did Kevin Spacey, and a good friend of mine who, if she's reading this, I am sure is remembering her apprenticeship at the theatre fondly.
